The only thing which must be remembered is that compost from the toilet system must be tested to ensure that it is safe to use as fertilizer. Once it is tested and confirmed that the composting process is complete then it is safe for use.  The benefits for the environment of compost as a fertilizer are tremendous because it can end our dependency on fertilizer made from salt, natural gas and other toxic waste streams.  Natural gas is essentially a petroleum based product that is turned into fixed nitogen and combined with salt, which washes into the watershed and causes "Nutrient Pollution".  "Nutrient Pollution" causes algea blooms in watersheds such as the Chesapeake Bay.  Algea Blooms when they die use up all the disolved oxygen in the water and this causes fish kills and other illnesses in fish and aquatic life.  The other thing which we are researching is that salt from fertilizer could be increasing the salinity levels in the Chesapeake Bay.  High salinity in the bay is the number one problem for the Oysters.  The second problem for the Oysters is the Sediment Pollution. If Oysters were plentiful as they should be they could filter all the extra nutrients in the Chesapeake Bay in one day.  Compost Tea can be used to replace fertilizer and build our soil structure instead of destroy it. Strategic rainwater harvesting can be used to recharge the groundwater and reduce erosion to our land and sedimentation to the Chesapeake Bay.  By infiltrating rainwater back into the groundwater we can increase the freshwater to the watersheds which supply the Chesapeake Bay.  We here at Sun-Mar Maryland are saving our nickles and dimes to become certified by Soils Food Web Lab, Inc.  Please go to our links page and click on Soil Food Web.com to learn more. The only two things in nature which can fix nitrogen so that it is available to be used by plants and animals is lightning and bacteria.  When we introduce fertilizer into the environment it adds salt and nitrogen to the environment which would not otherwise have been available to plants and animals.  This overdose of salt and nitrogen is polluting and poisening our environment.

Fertilizer also pollutes the air and is a cause of Global Warming.  Fertilizer when it oxidizes turns into gases which cause greenhouse effect.

Compost Tea is another way that compost can be used to build a web of life in the soil and sustain plants naturally lessen erosion and the need for pesticides.
